Album Title:
Old Growth on public land. Lemolo Timber Sale

Description:
This is the Lemolo timber sale proposed in the Umpqua National Forest on the western slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range, in Oregon. The sale is near the crest of the Cascades, between 4000 and 6000 feet in elevation. It is on the very edge of the "indistrial forest", next to the roadless Oregon Cascade Recreation Area (OCRA), which is next to Mt. Thielsen Wildernes, which adjoins the northern border of Crater Lake National Park and the southern border of Diamond Peak Wilderness (Willamette National Forest). If you don't think these roadless forests should be roaded and clearcut, you can tell the government your opinion in Spring of 2002. Write to the Diamond Lake District Ranger John Ouimet, jouimet@fs.fed.us . This timber sale is in a spectuclar forest that supports the highest recreation use on the entire Umpqua National Forest. Unfortunately the government has designated this part of the forest to be managed for the benefit of the local timber industry (Boise-Cascade and Roseburg Forest Products), and tries to log here the heaviest (but we have stoped some logging). The Forest Service plan is to have all the forests available for cutting to be converted to tree plantations within 50 years. Once converted, the forest will never be allowed to become 600 year old ancient forests again, as they will be continually logged on a rotational basis about every 80 years.
