Tribal Land
This land was public BLM
forests given to the Coquille
Indian Tribe in 1997. The
Tribe decided to clearcut it
and sold the trees to Lone
Rock Timber (not Indian
owned or operated). Two
court orders found the
logging plan harmed the
watershed which supports
Coastal Coho Salmon
(endangered fish). But
during a short loophole the
protections were lifted, and
Lone Rock Timber ran in and clearcut
this unit and another
unit before they should have stopped on December 14. Unfortunately, even then, they continued to log illegally until January 3rd.
