9b. Old-Growth Forest Canopy
This is a picture looking up at an old-growth forest canopy in unit 36. This forest is proposed for clearcutting. It is on the unroaded edge of a 36,000 roadless area called the Oregon Cascade Recreation Area (OCRA), which is on the edge of Mt. Thielsen Wilderness, which is adjacent to Crater Lake National Park. We proposed this unique place as the Medicine Mountain National Mounment, in honor of the Indian name of the highest peak. It is the Umpqua National Forest's highest recreation use area, but has also recently become their heaviest logged area.
